Support Groups
“It is so comforting to know that I’m not the only one who feels this way.”
Support groups offer empathy, information, and practical help to validate our feelings and experiences as mothers. It is aplace to discuss issues and coping strategies related to the adjustment and challenges of new motherhood. Support groups do not replace the necessary medical treatment and counseling by a trained therapist or medical professional. But, social support is an essential component to wellness in which women learn that they are not alone, they are not to blame, and they will get better in time.
Feedback on Support Groups:
“It was the one place that I could share how I felt and know that I wouldn’t be judged.”
“I learned that PPD does not always mean you are sad or crying. The anxiety and worry about my baby that consumed my thoughts was shared by many other mothers.”
“It took time for me to be okay with asking for help or making myself a priority. It’s the best thing I’ve done for my family so I don’t burn out.”
“There is no such thing as the ‘perfect mother’. I realized that the way I do things as a mom may be different from my own mother, my friends, or all the conflicting information on the internet. But, I’m doing what works best for me and my family. And, that’s all that matters.”
“It was good to hear that other couples also struggle with some of the same things that have created tension in our relationship.”
“I got to know a few moms in our group pretty well. We encouraged each other to try new things with our babies, get out of the house, meet at the park, and go for walks. It helped me to not feel so isolated being at home all day with my baby.”
